Can Parents Get In Trouble With Child Protective Services If They Smoke Marijuana?

11 December 17th, 2009

My friends neighbor is a bit concerned and asked her this question tonight. I couldn’t answer it either, so i’ll post my question on here.
Taking into consideration that the children are well cared for and live in a safe, loving and happy environment. Can parents get in trouble with child protective services (Ontario), because they use marijuana for recreational purposes?

Its possible. An illegal drug is illegal which means there is illegal activity surrounding the kids. But in reality if the kids are living in a relatively safe and caring home, the CAS wont bother them. But if there are any questions of the children’s safety then they may ask the parents to do a drug test and then they may get into further trouble.
I do not condone smoking marijuana, but realistically the CAS has many other ‘larger’ problems to deal with. But if there are complaints from family members, friends concerned neighbours etc they will investigate.

Yes, parents can get in trouble for smoking marijuana even for recreational purposes. I don’t know the laws in Ontario, but I’m assuming it’s illegal. It’s irresponsible to be parents and smoke dope. Not only is your friend putting her children at risk for being taken away and put into the system, but think of all the health risks if she is smoking in the house with the children! Even if the children are down the hall and in the their room, smoke travels through out the house. Tell your friend she should spend her dope money on something more important, like her kids.

yes i am sure you can because they could say it is endangering the welfare of a minor.and if you can not pass a drug test if for some reason they ask for one you can lose your children in arkansas so better safe than sorry good luck

isn’t marijuana in small quantities legal in canada? if so then i’d say no they can’t get into trouble but in the states i’m sure they can even more so if it affects the kids or they do it around them

Um I don’t know about Ontario but I’m thinking they sure freakin can because its illegal, let alone do it when you have kids. How the hell can everthing be okay with the kids when their parents are always high?
